First, describe the result
You do not need to arrive knowing the technical name of your service. Start with what you want to see: more brightness around your face, a softer root, subtle ribbons through your lengths, or a more noticeable change.
Placement changes the feeling
Balayage uses painted placement, while foil highlighting can create fine or more defined brightness in selected sections. Your colorist may use a combination. Neither name on its own tells the whole story of the finished look.
Talk about the grow-out
Ask where the lightness will begin and how it will meet your natural color. Root blending, contrast, and your starting color all affect how the result looks over time. A low-maintenance look still needs a care plan.
Bring photos—and your routine
Choose a few photos with the tone and contrast you like. Tell your colorist what your hair has been through and how often you want to return. Those details are more useful than trying to choose a technique on your own.
Questions to compare the options
- Where do I want brightness: around my face, through the lengths, or throughout my hair?
- Which parts of the reference show placement, and which show tone?
- How would the proposed placement grow out on my starting color?
- If I also want a cut, how should we plan the shape and color together?
